Vietnam Travel Guide 2026–2027 for US Citizens and Hong Kong Residents: Visas, Transport, and Entry Requirements
Vietnam—whether it’s the French charm of Ho Chi Minh City, the sunny beaches of Da Nang, or the piping hot Pho on the streets of Hanoi—remains a top destination for travelers from the US and Hong Kong residents alike. However, for those living in the US or holding a Hong Kong SAR passport, the biggest question before departure is often: How do I actually handle the visa?
This guide is specifically curated for Hong Kong SAR passport holders residing in the US and US citizens, covering the latest 2026–2027 Vietnam visa policies, transportation tips, and entry requirements to ensure a smooth journey from New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, or Hong Kong.
1. Do US Citizens Need a Visa for Vietnam?
Answer: Yes. As of 2026, Vietnam has not implemented a comprehensive visa-exemption policy for US passport holders. Whether traveling for tourism, visiting family, or on a business trip, US citizens must obtain a valid visa before departure. The US is currently not on the list of countries eligible for visa-free entry into mainland Vietnam. ⚠️ Important Note: Do not travel with a “wait and see” attitude—without a visa, the airline will deny you boarding.
🏝️ The Only Exemption: Phu Quoc Island
Phu Quoc is the only region in Vietnam currently offering visa-free entry to US passport holders for up to 30 days. You must meet all the following conditions:
-
Passport valid for at least 6 months.
-
Hold a confirmed return ticket or a ticket to a third country.
-
Must fly directly to Phu Quoc International Airport (PQC)—connecting flights through the Vietnamese mainland will void the exemption.
-
Stay is restricted to Phu Quoc Island only. ⚠️ Critical Trap: If you fly to Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi first and then transfer to Phu Quoc, the visa-free status is immediately revoked; you must apply for a full visa.
💼 APEC Business Travel Card (ABTC) Holders
If you hold a valid APEC Business Travel Card, you can enter mainland Vietnam visa-free for up to 90 days.
2. Do Hong Kong SAR Passport Holders Need a Visa?
Answer: Yes. Whether you are based in Hong Kong, the US, or anywhere else in the world, HKSAR passport holders must apply for a visa to enter Vietnam.
🏝️ Phu Quoc Visa Exemption
HKSAR passport holders enjoy the same 30-day visa-free treatment as US citizens under the same conditions—you must fly directly to Phu Quoc and remain on the island.
💼 APEC Business Travel Card (ABTC) Holders
Valid ABTC holders can enter mainland Vietnam visa-free for up to 90 days.
⚠️ Special Note for BNO Passport Holders
BNO (British National (Overseas)) passport holders also require a visa and cannot use the E-Visa effectively in all cases. BNO holders must apply via Visa on Arrival (VOA)—obtaining an Approval Letter in advance and picking up the visa sticker upon arrival. 💡 Tip: When applying, ensure the nationality is selected correctly. Some sources suggest BNO holders may attempt an E-Visa, but this carries a significant boarding risk. The safest route remains the VOA or applying through a consulate.
3. 2026–2027 Visa Options
① E-Visa (⭐ Most Recommended)
The E-Visa is the mainstream choice for US citizens and HKSAR passport holders in 2026. Processed entirely online, no consulate visit required.
Required Documents:
-
Clear scan of the passport data page (valid for at least 6 months from the date of departure from Vietnam).
-
Recent 4x6cm digital portrait photo (white background, front-facing, no glasses, ears visible, taken within 6 months, JPG format, under 2MB).
-
Vietnam accommodation address (first hotel).
-
Credit card or PayPal.
⚠️ US Passport Trap: Your passport must have at least 1 blank page for stamps. US emergency passports (12 pages) may not be accepted for E-Visa entry.Apply Here (Select E-Visa): https://www.vietnam-visa.hk/apply-vietnam-visa/
② Visa on Arrival (VOA)
You must obtain an “Approval Letter” before boarding. Upon arrival at a Vietnamese airport, proceed to the “Visa on Arrival” counter to pay fees and receive the stamp.
-
Applicable to: US Citizens, HKSAR passport holders, and BNO passport holders.
-
⚠️ Restriction: VOA is only valid for travel by air; it is not accepted at land borders.Apply Here (Select VOA): https://www.vietnam-visa.hk/apply-vietnam-visa/
③ Vietnamese Consulate Visa
Suitable for special cases (e.g., long-term work visas, diplomatic visas). Requires an in-person visit to the consulate.
